Additional information on producer responsibility now easily available
The Advisory Board for Finnish PROs wants to serve also foreign distance sellers and English-speaking producers operating in Finland. Contacting Finnish producer responsibility organizations and requesting for additional information on producer responsibility has recently become easier as we have published our contact form in English.
In Finland, circular economy is largely based on the producer responsibility for waste management. In practice, producer responsibility means that companies are responsible for the management of their products when they are discarded and that, as a result, consumers can recycle free of charge.
Producer responsibility applies to foreign distance sellers too
Producer responsibility applies to producers who place products on the Finnish market on a professional basis. Importantly, producer responsibility for waste management applies to foreign distance sellers and Finnish companies alike.
Producers include manufacturers, importers, packers and distance sellers of certain products defined by the Waste Act. Companies must manage producer responsibility for the following products:
- batteries and accumulators (incl. inside vehicles and electrical equipment)
- vehicles
- packaging
- paper and paper products
- tyres
- electrical and electronic equipment
- certain single-use plastic products (SUP)
- fishing gear containing plastic (SUP)
Producer responsibility organisations at your service
The easiest way to manage producer responsibilities in Finland is to join a producer responsibility organization (PRO). PROs carry out the legal obligations on behalf of the company:
- collection, transport, management and recycling of end-of-life products
- reporting monitoring data to the supervisory authority on an annual basis
- ensuring that recycling targets are met
Since different producer responsibilities are managed by different PROs, companies must join as many PROs as necessary to cover all the responsibilities they have. For example, three different PROs are needed to cover the producer responsibilities of an electronic device that also includes packaging and a battery.
